Galaxy Z Flip 6
Samsung’s latest version of its distinctive clamshell-style cellphones is called the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Although it isn’t significantly different from the model from the previous year, it does have a newer Snapdragon CPU, up to 12GB of RAM, and new Galaxy AI functions as part of its OneUI Android interface.
For
Against
Galaxy Z Flip 5
With its elegant, folding form and 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED display, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 offers a special fusion of fashion and utility. Its small size makes it very portable, and the most recent Snapdragon processor guarantees strong performance.
For
Against
Samsung improved upon an already good recipe with the Galaxy Z Flip 6, adding a brighter main screen, an improved primary camera, a larger battery, and for the first time in a Galaxy Flip phone a thermal cooling chamber. Along with these hardware enhancements, the Flip 6 also gets some helpful AI capabilities, like the brand-new “Sketch to Image” tool, which will only be available on the Flip and Fold 6 series for a few months before becoming available on previous Galaxy devices, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.
Does this mean that an upgrade is warranted? We are discussing first access to some software features as well as a few hardware enhancements. Let’s investigate.

Design and display
Glancing at the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, it’s difficult to tell them difference. Both foldables use the same internal and external AMOLED display technology, as well as the same dimensions and weight. Both have 6.7-inch FHD inner screens that can refresh at up to 120 Hz, and 3.4-inch outside screens that can only refresh at 60 Hz.
At least Samsung has changed the color scheme between generations. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is available in Mint, Graphite, Cream, or Lavender by default; if you purchase the phone straight from Samsung, you may also choose from Gray, Blue, Green, and Yellow.
The default colors for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 are now Blue and Yellow. Mint and the Silver Shadow, which resembles graphite, are still available. For this device, only Samsung offers the exclusive colors Crafted Black, White, and Peach.
Each colorway’s otherwise blank outside screen has a distinct personality due to the colors visible around the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s cameras. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 has surrounds that are all the same silver hue.
Durability is the sole significant distinction between the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 6’s construction. In addition to having a stronger and more compact folding mechanism than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 boasts an enhanced Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 (instead of the original GG Victus).
This benefit includes resistance to water and dust. With an IPX8 rating, the Z Flip 5 is certified to withstand drops of water but not necessarily dust or other tiny particles. For the first time, a Samsung flip foldable phone has been certified dust resistant thanks to the IP48 classification of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. This is a significant additional assurance that the phone will withstand mishaps and bad weather.
CAMERA
Editor’s Choice
A notable improvement made by Samsung between the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the replacement of the 12MP primary camera of the former foldable with a 50MP one. Just as Samsung’s other Galaxy phones with this sensor, this also offers an efficient 2x lossless zoom option for times when higher-resolution standard images are needed.
Other from that, the 12MP ultrawide and 10MP selfie camera resolutions are the same on the two Z Flips. With its new type of sensor, the ultrawide camera on the Z Flip 6 can capture 4K footage for the first time and perform better in low light. However, there probably won’t be much of a difference between the wide or front-facing images taken with these two phones, barring certain firmware improvements. However, after we’ve tested the phones together, we’ll report back with all the details.

PERFORMANCE
Utilizing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy rather than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 clearly improves over the Z Flip 5’s processor. In addition, the Z Flip 6 has the first-ever vapor chamber cooling system on a Samsung flip foldable, and 12GB of RAM instead than the 8GB that all previous Z Flips used. These innovations should also improve performance. However, much as with the pictures, we’ll update you when we receive complete benchmark data.
The storage capacities of both phones are the same 256GB by default and 512GB optional. When comparing the Galaxy Z Flip 6 to the initial pricing of the Galaxy Z Flip 5, the sole distinction is that both are more costly in the case of the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
BATTERY AND CHARGING
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 now uses a larger 4,000 mAh battery instead of the 3,700 mAh one found in the Galaxy Z Flip 5. This might result in a noticeable increase in battery life for the newer phone, given the same displays and a more advanced chipset. See you soon for the results of our test.
Although there may be room for improvement in the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s battery life compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 5, charging capabilities remain unchanged, since both phones support 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. In reality, because the Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a larger battery and needs more milliampere-hours to charge than the Z Flip 5, it might charge more slowly.

SOFTWARE AND SPECIAL FEATURES
Software for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is Android 14, which is a more recent version than the Android 13 software that was included with the Galaxy Z Flip 5. A small annoyance, though, is that the Z Flip 5 can be updated to the same software version. In the future, though, the Z Flip 6 will receive more software upgrades since it is newer and has a seven-year warranty instead of the Z Flip 5’s four-year warranty.
With the Galaxy Z Flip 6, Samsung is releasing some enhanced Galaxy AI features, including real-time translation during voice calls, new AI-generated message responses, and Interpreter mode for in-person translations using both the inner and outer screens. Although they weren’t included in the box, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has since been updated to include Galaxy AI capabilities. Hopefully, like before, it will acquire these new abilities on its own in a few months.
VERDICT
With a considerable number of improvements over the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung has made the Galaxy Z Flip 6 the undisputed better phone. Rather, the value proposition of these two foldables is what drives this comparison.
Better software, a more durable construction, and an upgraded chipset and main camera are all desirable features, but the real question is whether you’d save at least over the same old model that performs all the same functions. We’d incline toward purchasing the new model and paying the additional money, but we won’t know for sure until after our testing is finished.
